The American Futon is Different than the Japanese

futon

Before the futon made a big hit in the United States, it was popular in Japan. The Japanese word “shikibuton” means mattress. Americans refer to these mattresses as futons. They can be seen frequently in Japan but are different than the American version. The Japanese version is much thinner than the type loved by Americans. These thin mattresses used by the Japanese lay flat on the floor. In the morning these mattresses are typically rolled up and stored away to allow for more room, due to the fact that household space in Japan is often limited. When the mattresses need repair or sprucing they are brought to a futonier, who in Japan is someone skilled with this type of mattress. The American futon is a thicker mattress made out of cotton, which normally sits inside a frame. The frames can come in variety of materials, as do the covers that are typically placed over the frame.
